Argentina to reduce river and port pilotage rates 20 - 40pc

Argentina has announced new maximum rate regulations for river and port pilotage services that reduces tariffs 20 to 40 per cent, reports London-based Nisomar, a "big data" port agency.

The announcement by the Argentine Secretariat of Ports and Waterways of the Ministry of Transport is in co-operation with the country's shipping industry and will increase the competitiveness of its ports.

The new regulations mark the first time the Argentinean government has imposed a rate since 1992 and follows its public hearing last month on setting a maximum rate for pilotage services. Tariffs have been unregulated in the past 25 years.

Pilotage is compulsory for all foreign vessels in all zones (rivers, streams, passes, estuaries, channels andports) and only licensed pilots must be employed.
