Intra-Asia carriers augment India-China runs in multi-port loops

OCEAN carriers, engaged in the intra-Asian trade, are increasing services connecting ports on India's east and west coasts to major China ports, reports IHS Media.

China is India's biggest trading partner by dollar volume, exporting US$9.7 billion of goods through October year on year, an increase of 44.7 per cent while China exports $59.1 billion to India in the same period, an increase of 16.2 per cent.

The China-East India loop (CI3), run by Cosco, IAL, OOCL" target="_blank" class="external noeffect">OOCL and X-Press Feeders, will deploy five 4,250-TEU ships, with Wan Hai contributing two. Cosco and IAL provide one each while the others contribute one vessel.

The CI3 loop will rotate from Shanghai sailing first to Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Shekou, Singapore, Port Klang (West Port), Port Klang (North Port), Chennai, Kattupalli, Port Klang (North Port), Singapore and back to Shanghai in a 35-day rotation.

The first sailing from Shanghai is scheduled for January 23 and will arrive at the PSA Chennai Terminal on February 8.

For Chennai, India's busiest eastern public harbour, the new call comes as it is fighting to hold onto its market share in the face of intense rivalry from Kattupalli.

Adani Group-operated Kattupalli has been making steady inroads, with some of those gains driven by congestion at Chennai. Statistics show Chennai's volume in December totaled 132,760 TEU while Kattupalli handled 40,367 TEU.

Spotting intra-Asia trade trends, Thailand's short-sea Regional Container Lines (RCL) announced plans to join the CI3 through in a slot deal. The company will market the new route as the "RCL Far East Chennai (RFC)" service.

With that arrangement, RCL is said to be in a position to offer five sailings per week between China and India's east coast.

Cosco has also joined Wan Hai to operate a new service between China and India's west coast. Under the CI6, Cosco will phase in four vessels, one of which will be from Wan Hai.

Starting from Shanghai on January 24, the Cosco-Wan Hai loop will rotate through Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen-Shekou, Guangzhou-Nansha, Singapore, Mumbai (JNPT), Pipavav, Penang and back to Shanghai.

APM Terminals-operated Gateway Terminals India at JNPT is expected to hold the first CI6 call during the second week of February.
