Virginia sees strong box throughput growth in 2017

THE Port of Virginia moved a record 2.84 million TEU in 2017, an increase of seven per cent compared with the previous year, and almost hitting its maximum throughput capacity of three million TEU.

Loaded import TEU rose 8.6 per cent year on year, while loaded exports were up one per cent.

Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart noted in a statement that the volume growth came in a year when the port embarked on its largest ever infrastructure projects: the US$320 million expansion of Virginia International Gateway and the build-up of its Norfolk International Terminals' facility, helped by a US$350 million state-backed bond package, reported The Virginian-Pilot.

In 2017 truck-container volume growth of nine per cent outpaced rail volume growth of 3.4 per cent. However, breakbulk tonnage declined by 8.5 per cent year on year.

The port of Virginia joins a string of other US ports that reported a strong performance in 2017 as well.

From January through November, the port of Savannah in Georgia saw its container throughput rise by 11 per cent, while box volumes were up 8.9 per cent at the port of Charleston in South Carolina, and the port of New York and New Jersey registered growth of 7.7 per cent.

On the US west coast, the port of Los Angeles reported January through November container volumes (TEU) rose by 6.3 per cent year on year, while the port of Long Beach in California recorded 10 per cent year-on-year growth over the same period.
