Long Beach offers US high school students internship opportunities
THE second-busiest US container port Long Beach is offering high school students the opportunity to apply for paid high school internships or college scholarships.
The Port of Long Beach has opened applications for its Summer High School Internship Programme as well as for its college scholarships for students pursuing careers in port-related fields, portstrategy.com reported.
The internships, which are opportunities for students to explore careers in the goods movement industry, will see successful applicants working at the port in a scheme which runs from June 25 to August 16.
Applications for the paid internships, which comprise a partnership between the Port and Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, are open to high school juniors and seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) service area.
The scholarships are available to LBUSD-area high school seniors pursuing careers in international trade, logistics and other port-related industries. Grant money, which ranges from US$1,000 to $5,000, will be awarded to the successful applicants over four years of college, with the port having given out almost $721,000 in local student scholarships since 1993.
Long Beach Harbour Commission president Lou Anne Bynum said: "We are dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders for the port and international trade. Our summer interns get to work hands-on doing the daily business of the port, while our scholarships are part of a long-standing commitment to supporting higher education in the city we serve."
Applications for both schemes close on March 1, with no late submissions accepted, and those applying are advised to read the instructions carefully.
