Arizona airport to open air cargo hub to process US-Mexico e-commerce traffic

SKYBRIDGE Arizona plans to open the first international air cargo hub in the US to house a joint Mexican and US Customs operation at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in a bid to attract more e-commerce traffic.

The new facility aims to enable e-commerce companies and manufacturers conducting business in Mexico and Latin America to more efficiently and cost-effectively transport goods between countries without the need to go through the international Customs centre in Mexico City, reported London's Air Cargo News.

The project is made possible through the Unified Cargo Inspection programme which came into effect in July 2016. All required documents, inspections and tracking would occur on-site at the airport. The facility has a 15-year build out plan and include 800,000 square feet of air cargo operations.

"The Customs processing status will follow packages and cargo electronically to their final destination to any city in Mexico, and eventually further into Central and South America," the office of Arizona governor Doug Ducey said in a statement. "The UCP programme will be operational at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in the coming months."

The project is expected to increase cargo flights out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport by 2,000 a year to hit 10,000 by 2036.

Air freight trade between Arizona and Mexico currently totals US$390 million per year and is expected to swell to $650 million by 2025.
