Arrests made after drugs, gold, animal parts seizures at Bengaluru's airport

CUSTOMS officials at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport in the Indian state of Karnataka netted illegally smuggled goods including gold and drugs worth INR1.15 crore (US$181,585), camel teeth and bison horns in four separate swoops made within the first four days of the new year.

The airport's courier and customs intelligence unit seized 11 kilogrammes of ketamine worth INR1 crore on the international market that was being smuggled to Kuala Lumpur as air cargo, reported The New Indian Express.



According to customs officials, the exporter had declared the drugs as "assorted Indian sweets" and they were found hidden inside a consignment comprising 17 boxes.



The shipment had been collected by Fedex in Chennai and was sent to Bengaluru for shipment to Malaysia's capital city. Fedex managers in Chennai and Bengaluru will be summoned as part of the investigation into the drugs haul. 



In a separate case, two passengers have been arrested by police after they were found carrying 71 kg of camel teeth. Both residents of Mysuru, the pair were intercepted by customs officials while trying to take a Thai Air flight to Bangkok.



On January 1 customs officials arrested one man who was carrying 500 grammes of gold worth INR15.13 lakh. The arrested has been named as Shamil Ahmed and is a resident of Bhatkal.



Shamil arrived in Bengaluru from Dubai. The police found that he had concealed the gold, minted in various shapes to evade detection, in the rivets of his suitcases, in the metal frames of a purse and also in the form of embroidery work in a burqa.



On the same day, customs officials arrested a Bengaluru resident after they found two bison horns weighing 24 kg in his baggage. The man had arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur.
