Asia's big air carriers post mixed demand growth in November

CARGO airlines in Asia achieved a mixed performance in demand in November, yet in most cases growth was up, reported London's Air Cargo News.

Cathay Pacific, the region's biggest cargo carrier, achieved higher growth in November year on year by 11.2 per cent to 1.1 billion cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres.

The result is ahead of October's growth of 4.2 per cent and its year-to-date improvement of 8.9 per cent.

Capacity in November expanded by the lower amount of 5.9 per cent when compared to 2016 and as a result the cargo load factor reached 71.6 per cent against 68.1 per cent the previous year.

Said Cathay cargo chief Ronald Lam: "Our high year-on-year tonnage growth reflects the overall strength in the world's air cargo markets.

"E-commerce related movements were boosted by events such as Chinese Singles' Day, which helped to even out the traditional dip in demand following the Thanksgiving holiday, and we saw high load factors and improving yields.

"We broke our weekly tonnage uplift record in the week starting November 26, while a number of key markets across our network also established new revenue records during the month."

As for Air China its cargo traffic for November rose by eight per cent to 688 million revenue freight tonne kilometres. This is behind its year-to-date growth of 8.4 per cent and its October increase of 14.1 per cent.

Domestic traffic decreased year on year during the month, yet international and regional traffic registered double-digit growth.

China Airlines recorded an 8.8 per cent improvement to 519 million freight and revenue tonne kilometres, ahead of year-to-date growth of eight per cent and October's growth of 5.8 per cent.

China Southern saw cargo traffic increase by 2.3 per cent for November to 662 million revenue tonne kilometres, but this was weaker than year-to-date growth of 13.9 per cent.

Eva Air's traffic declined by 0.9 per cent year on year in November to 315 million freight tonne kilometres against an improvement of 3.9 per cent for the year.

SIA Cargo experienced its busiest month of the year in November, with demand up 7.1 per cent to 671 million revenue tonne kilometres.
