Wallem crew rescue of men flung overboard from lighter off Venezuela
THE crew of the Wallem-managed 115,341-dwt crude oil tanker Troviken took part in a rescue along with the Venezuelan coast guard at Puerto Jose anchorage.
Puerto Jose is an oil tanker loading complex exporting Venezuela's petroleum products onto ships.
An anchored ship a mile away from the Troviken was receiving provisions from a lighter when it capsized in rough water, sending its four crew overboard.
Due to the rough weather the anchored ship could not lower her rescue boats and so requested assistance from the coast guard.
Upon hearing the distress messages over the radio, the master of the Troviken alerted his crew on deck and began and lookout.
One of the four crewmen had drifted away from the anchored ship and was spotted near the port bow of the Troviken.
Seeing as it was too dangerous to lower the rescue boat due to the weather, the crew threw a lifebuoy and line to the man and reeled him onboard via the ship's port side gangway. The man was rescued and given care and first aid aboard the Troviken.
The three other crewmen were spotted in the sea, holding onto a lifebuoy and pulled aboard the coastguard cutter.
