NYK digitises captains' experience in ship collision avoidance
JAPANESE shipping giant NYK and Japan Marine Science Inc have studied collision risk using a ship-handling simulator and applying data from experienced captains on how they avoid collisions, and then digitising that data.
The study includes functions to facilitate judgement on avoiding collision with other vessels, remote operations by land operators and devices related to AR (augmented reality) of nautical instrument information.
"Usually, officers make a prediction, a judgment of the risk of collision based on their own experience, but each person's sense of danger differs," said the NYK press release.
"The use of accumulated data to develop common standards will help officers to appropriately judge risk and prevent collisions," said the NYK statement.
"NYK will continue to boost digitalisation by taking advantage of promising collaborations that make use operational expertise, analyses and networks to enhance transport safety," it said.
