Sri Lanka port sector handles over six million TEU in 2017

THE Port of Colombo handled its six millionth TEU on December 22, which was marked by a special function at the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT).

The Port of Colombo recalled that its handling one million TEU occured in 1995. It took nearly nine years to reach two million TEU collaboratively with the privately owned SAGT in 2004.

But in 2006 the port handled three million TEU, then four million TEU in 2010 and five million TEU with then new terminal CICT in 2015.

Together with the latest developments in the Sri Lankan port sector, six million TEU mark this year was achieved through aggressive marketing implemented in collaboration with the SAGT, CICT and state-owned JCT.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), being the landlord, regulator and the port operator together with other terminals has been able to attract more main lines and feeder services to the Port of Colombo in 2017.

Speaking at the event marking the achievement, Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasing said: "Deviating from traditional competition, Sri Lanka Ports Authority controlled Jaya Container Terminal, privately owned SAGT and CICT together have proven to be a success story."

SLPA chairman Parakrama Dissanayak said that it was a historic milestone for the port authority as it was for the JCT, SAGT and the CICT handling million containers in the Port of Colombo.
