APM Terminals goes ahead with expansion of Mobile port terminal

THE third development phase of APM Terminals' container terminal at the port of Mobile in Alabama is to commence in 2018.

The terminal operator completed the second phase of the box terminal's expansion that included two giant new cranes this year.

The latest US$49.5 million expansion project will raise the terminal's box handling capacity to 650,000 TEU and will feature a 400-foot extension of the dock serviced by the terminal's four container cranes, plus 20 acres of yard to store incoming and outgoing container shipments, reported AL.com of Alabama.

The dock extension will enable the terminal to simultaneously handle two super postpanamax vessels that are 1,000 feet long.

APM Terminals Mobile managing director Brian Harold said the expansion "enables us to stay well ahead of the growth pattern we've seen in the port of Mobile, as well as add dock space to support the growing vessel sizes that are coming to the terminal."

In 2016, a record-breaking year, APM handled 277,307 TEU in Mobile.
