Rolls-Royce and MOL test technology to create autonomous ships
JAPANESE shipping giant MOL Line and Britain's Rolls-Royce Marine are partners in a joint artificial intelligence project to design and build autonomous ships
MOL is applying Rolls-Royce's Intelligent Awareness System (IAS) to be installed on a ferry in already in service.
As a first step, the technology will be used in new sensors for nautical instruments such as radar to detect nearby ships and other obstacles by integration and analysis of the data obtained.
This in turn will provide immediate, accurate information to officers aboard and, later integrate weather and route information.
This, the companies believe, will provide the foundation technology for autonomous navigation.
The IAS will be conducted on a ferry in service in the Seto Naikai Inland Sea, operated by MOL-Group Ferry Sunflower Limited.
The Inland Sea is one of the world's most congested sea areas. MOL and Rolls-Royce will jointly collect and analyse data on marine currents, vessel traffic congestion and other conditions in the area to promote practical application and research of the system.
