Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport aims to be European cargo hub

RUSSIA's Moscow Cargo, Sheremetyevo International Airport's (SVO), ground handler has launched commercial operations at its new 43,200-square metre cargo complex, the company announced.

"The goal of Sheremetyevo International Airport is to establish itself as the leading European hub for global cargo flows." said airport chairman Alexander Ponomarenko.

As the biggest such operation in Russia, the new terminal handles 250 tonnes of cargo a day and has an annual capacity of 380,000 tonnes a year.

Unprecedented in Russia, its systems will allow the automation of 60 per cent of all throughput.

Said Mr Ponomarenko: "The significant growth of cargo turnover at Sheremetyevo Airport and the rising demands of cargo airlines are owing to the worldwide trend that demonstrates a major increase in air freight volume.

"We face and welcome this challenge together with Aeroflot, Volga-Dnepr and other cargo operators," he said.

"By 2024, we expect to handle more than 700,000 tonnes annually. To achieve this ambitious goal, the engineering and construction of the second cargo terminal with a capacity of 380,000 tonnes per year is set to commence in 2018," Mr Ponomarenko said.

The complex meets the highest international standards of the ground cargo handling, said the company.

The cargo complex is equipped with a unique system for automated storage and processing, manufactured by Lodige. Automation level of production processes reaches 60 per cent.

All cargo operations on domestic flights were successfully moved to the new terminal in two months, making it a record-breaking time for similar-scale projects.

New cargo terminal handles about 250 tonnes of cargo per day. Additional staff training programme on systems and equipment operation was introduced to instruct personnel on running machineries previously unfamiliar in Russia.
