New PSA terminal at Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port opens January 15
THE first phase of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT), a subsidiary of Singapore's PSA International, will begin operations from January 15.
BMCT is As Jawaharlal Nehru Port's (JN Port) fourth terminal, BMCT has 4.8 million TEU annual capacity, a 1,000-metre quay, a container stack yard, internal roads, parking area and container handling equipment.
The second phase of the project will add a container handling capacity of 4.8 million TEU, expand the quay by 1,000 metres and be equipped with similar facilities.
In a related development, BMCT and the Container Corporation of India (Concor) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to handle and operate dedicated container trains between the terminal and northern and western India, Mumbai's DNA reported.
These freight trains will shuttle containers to Concor's rail transshipment hubs (RTHs). BMCT plans to designate Kathuwas in Rajasthan's Alwar district and Jakhwada near Viramgam in Gujarat as RTHs.
"Concor will ensure competitive rail freight costs and transit times between BMCT and the RTHs in addition to providing competitive pre- as well as on-carriage rail options," said the BMCT statement.
