West African pirates kidnap 10-man crew off coast of Nigeria
NO word has been heard about the fate of 10 seamen taken by pirates on December 14 some 35 miles off Brass Nigeria from a 57,000-dwt bulk carrier en route from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
Before the ship was released, the pirates kidnapped the crew.
Intercargo, the association of dry cargo carriers, said the incident is a "vivid reminder that piracy remains a significant threat to shipping, trade, and the people who serve it".
"It must be ensured that there is no relaxation or step back in the measures in place against piracy; moreover, efforts and necessary resources fighting piracy must be upgraded primarily in the most vulnerable regions, such as West Africa, the Gulf of Aden, and south east Asia," said the Intercargo statement.
Intercargo has also participated in industry initiatives with stakeholders to ensure that optimal countermeasures are allocated in the coming years to eradicate piracy, the group said.
