Chittagong to ease congestion with US$29 million Karnaphuli dredging
THE Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) will conduct a BDT2.42 billion (US$29.2 million) dredging job of the Karnaphuli River to enable four lighters to function and reduce congestion at Bangladesh's biggest port.
Shippers say the low water on the Karnaphuli River slow or prevent lighter passage, causing delays in the discharge of cargo from ships at anchor.
When lighters are unable to navigate the river smoothly, especially at April-August low water, ships to can wait nearly a month to complete discharge.
Delays cause production disruptions ashore and account for higher demurrage charges for vessels for needless dwell time, reports IHS Media .
The cabinet committee on public procurement, with Finance Minister AMA Muhith as chair, approved the dredging project recently.
CPA chairman Rear Admiral M. Khaled Iqbal said that the dredging project will enable lighters and tankers with up to a four-metre draft (13.1-feet) in the Karnaphuli River, enabling them to carry goods to jetties.
Adm Iqbal said every day thousands of such vessels receive goods from ships staying at anchor, and ply river routes across the country.
Vessels with a larger than 9.5-metre draft (31-foot) cannot berth in the Port of Chittagong docks, due to low water, and must anchor in the outer bar of the port. Lighters then take cargo from ships at anchor to the jetties.
