Mooring lines snap in windy Boston, setting 9,000-TEUer adrift
ALL 12 mooring lines of "K" Line's 9,000-TEU Helsinki Bridge broke free of her moorings in high winds at Boston's Paul W Conley Container Terminal, reported Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
With two tugs and a docking pilot, the Japanese-flagged vessel was able to drop anchor in Broad Sound with some dock damage reported at the Massachusetts Port Authority's Black Falcon Pier.
The US Coast Guard had a team on board the vessel, looking at the equipment and the lines to determine what had happened, said US Coast Guard Lt Jennifer Sheehan.
"It's not unheard of for a vessel of this size to break its mooring during high winds. If you think about it, it has a lot of sail area, which is a lot of pressure from the wind.
