Lack of Visakhapatnam cold storage 'means pharma won't come'
PROSPECTS for developing Visakhapatnam Airport as a major pharma hub in south eastern India have been blighted by the lack of cold storage near the airport, says an official of the Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
"Pharma companies need cold storage facilities to store their products. Unlike other items, medicines should be preserved carefully.
International air cargo handling may not help pharma sector without a warehouse at the airport," said the chamber's safety committee chairman B Madhu.
India's Civil Aviation ministry has started the long-awaited cargo complex at Visakhapatnam airport, but pharma sector may not never benefit from such international cargo operations, he said.
When asked about other problems faced by the sector, he told the Deccan Chronicle that the city had reached a saturation point. When compared to other pharma hubs like Hyderabad, the city faces a shortage of skilled manpower.
"Severe slump in the economy, unnecessary political pressure and strict regulatory norms are the other challenges faced by the companies here," he said.
Upgrading infrastructure was the priority if there were any hope of exporting pharma products. The number of fire accidents at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC) and other pharma zones is also a major concern for the industry, Mr Madhu said.
