Oakland port's container imports hit record level of 76,706 TEU in Oct

THE port of Oakland handled a record 76,706 TEU of containesized cargo imports in October.

This comes as ports across the US have been experiencing record-setting import growth this year, which port officials and industry analysts attributed to a strong economy that has spurred consumer demand and spending.

According to the port, October's cargo rush marked a successful close to the traditional summer-autumn peak shipping season, a time when US retailers import extra merchandise from overseas to stock their shelves in time for the holidays, reported American Shipper.

In the first 10 months of 2017, Oakland's import volumes rose 4.4 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier.

Since the start of the port's fiscal year 2018 on July 1, total container throughput, including imports, exports and empty containers, is up 2.8 per cent.

"We're encouraged by the results we're seeing," port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll was quoted as saying. "The test for the industry is whether or not we can carry momentum into [the] next [calendar] year."
