Regional Container Lines pays nearly US$3m for baby boxship
THAI intra-Asian operator Regional Container Lines (RCL) has continued on its recent buying spree with the purchase of an unnamed vessel costing US$2.97 million with delivery expected to take place in January 2018.
RCL said its board had approved the purchase of the 390-TEU containership from Xinda (HK) Shipping and Wenzhou Shenchang Shipping.
The Bangkok-listed shipowner said the vessel, for which 85 per cent of the cost will be paid for on delivery, will be used to replace a former chartered-in vessel.
Late last month RCL ordered two Bangkokmax containership newbuildings in China for $19.6 million each. The vessels were ordered at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co and are due to be delivered in April and July 2019.
RCL said the ships were being ordered to replace existing vessels in a bid to upgrade its fleet with new and more efficient tonnage, reports TradeWinds of Oslo.
