Cosco on cusp of displacing CMA CGM as No 3 carrier in world league tables

IF COSCO Shipping attains three million TEU in fleet size by the end of 2018, it will then displace French shipping giant CMA CGM for the No 3 spot in global shipping league tables, said Paris-based container analyst Alphaliner.

According BlueWater Reporting, Cosco and Orient Overseas (International) Ltd, which Cosco is purchasing are currently the fourth and seventh place.

But growth would not only come from the merger of OOCL's 710,000-TEU fleet, but also from 20 new ships Cosco is building, said Alphaliner.

Eleven of the 20 ships being purchased are ultra-large container vessels of between 20,000 and 21,000 TEU. In total, Cosco has ordered 29 containerships, with the 20 ordered in October including six 21,237 TEU ships; five 20,119 TEU vessels; five 13,800 TEI ships; and four 14,568 TEU vessels.
