China tests super dredger to speed island building in South China Sea
CHINA is testing a super dredger to speed land reclamation as the country builds permanent structures in the South China Sea to substantiate controversial territorial claims, Reuters reports.
Citing the state-run Beijing News newspaper, Reuters said the Tian Kun began tests with a cutter suction dredger, a vessel used for large-scale creation of reclaimed land.
Recent satellite images show that China has undertaken more construction and reclamation in the South China Sea, through which nearly half of world trade passes each year.
This claim is made over the objections Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam the US, as well as a ruling from the World Court in the Hague.
Some experts say China will land its first deployments of jet fighters onto its runways in the Spratly islands in coming months.
