Maritime CIO Forum in Shanghai to talk digitalisation December 7

THIS year's Maritime CIO Forum organised by Digital Ship will be held in Shanghai on December 7 to discuss maritime digitalisation and smart shipping.

The forum aims to address the issues and trends that technology leaders face in an increasingly changing and continuously developing business environment.

The forum features four key sessions and interactive panel discussions on how the industry is responding to change and investigate what technology and digital transformation can do for the industry, a statement from the organisers said.

The opening session, "The Maritime Satcom Summit" will explore the evolution of maritime mobility and connectivity. The topic is: "The ever-growing use of on-board applications and increased data flows means that the shipping sector requires ever more reliable data communications."

This session will look at how innovation and evolution in maritime connectivity is changing the maritime landscape by improving operational agility, enhancing efficiency, and creating a safer, environment for crew, while reducing costs for the ship owner and manager.

The theme for the second session is: "harnessing Maritime Cyber Resilience", and will take a look at maritime cyber security, safety and risk.

This expert-led session will examine how the industry is reacting to the advent of increased cyber threats borne out of the growing use of cloud and IoT applications, the number of devices used, and larger ships but fewer crew - meaning even more reliance on automation and remote monitoring.

Confirmed speakers include: general manager Ralph van der Hoeven of Klaveness Shipping (Shanghai); McKinsey & Company partner Steve Saxon; general manager Wei Zhuang of BIMCO Shanghai; director - naval architect Ranjan Varghese at Steel Ships Ltd; and manager of International Maritime Research Department, Shipbuilding Information Center of China (SICC), Wei Fan.
