FAA: Drone operators can now seek a licence to fly near US airports
FOR the first time drone operators can request automated authorisation to fly near selected US airports using the same Airman ions and Android apps used in flight planning.
Automated authorisations with Airman are the result of collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Low Altitude Authorisation and Notification Capability (LAANC) initiative, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
Automated authorisation is now available at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Lincoln Airport (LNK), Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), and San Jose International Airport (SJC).
More FAA facilities are expected to offer LAANC authorisation in the near future, with a larger nationwide beta initiative expected in 2018.
Before LAANC, waivers to fly in controlled airspace could only be obtained through a application process that took 90 days.
