THE Sri Lanka Ports Authority announced that the port of Colombo has successfully handled the 20,568 TEU Milan Maersk, the largest containership to call at a port in South Asia to date.

Owned by Maersk Line, the Milan Maersk is one of the world's largest boxships that has been built this year. The mega containership was berthed at the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), reported Lanka Business Online.

The vessel is deployed on the AE 1 service which, at present, is the fastest service connecting Colombo to major north European countries such as the UK, Netherlands and Germany.

Commenting on the vessel's maiden call at Colombo, US Ambassador Atul Keshap, was quoted as saying: "The efficient contributions in maritime operations by the Colombo port have made this port a very much important shipping and transshipment centre in the Indian Ocean.

"United States, in collaboration with all possible authorities was working ahead to ensure the port of Colombo is a much safer maritime centre for all the shippers," added the Ambassador.
