Captain and five crew kidnapped from Dohle boxship off Nigereia
PIRATES have kidnapped six crew including the captain from a Peter Dohle containership, the 2,091 TEU Demeter, 40 nautical miles south of Bonny Island, Nigeria.
A spokesperson for manager Dohle said the attackers raided the vessel near the port of Onne early on October 21.
In a statement, the company said the attack happened prior to the ship entering Onne. The attackers boarded the boxship, built in 2006, taking the six crew with them when they left.
Apart from the captain, the others abducted are the vessel's cook, bosun, second engineer, second officer and chief mate, according to media reports.
There has been no contact as yet with the kidnappers, according to TradeWinds of Oslo.
"Managers would like to stress it will work closely with the local authorities and professional advisors to secure the earliest release of its crew," the statement said.
"The families of those currently held are being kept in touch with the situation." The vessel has since proceeded to safe waters.
Dohle will not provide any further information in order not to jeopardise the safety of those involved.
No German nationals were on board at the time and the remaining 12 seafarers were not injured in the incident.
AFP cited the Sea Guardian maritime security company as saying eight pirates attacked the ship in a speedboat.
Immediately after the attack all relevant authorities including the IMB piracy centre were informed.
The IMB ICC has recorded 20 successful pirate attacks in waters off Nigeria for the nine months ending in September. Almost all of them occurred while the vessel was under way, and the attackers' objectives frequently included kidnapping. In all, 39 crewmembers were victims of an attempted or successful kidnapping off Nigeria during the year through September.
