Port Virginia's September throughput up 8.2pc to 237,816 TEU

THE US port of Virginia saw container throughput rise by 8.2 per cent year on year in September to reach 237,816 TEU, making it the port's third busiest month so far this year.

In September, import-laden boxes rose 9.5 per cent year on year while export-laden units were down 6.2 per cent. Outbound empties increased 42.3 per cent and inbound empties fell 46 per cent, reported The Virginian-Pilot.



"We are seeing continued growth in all of our trade lanes, good peak-season volume and anticipate a solid performance for the remainder of the year," said CEO of the Virginia Port Authority, John Reinhart, in a statement.



Rail container volume in September was down 1.3 per cent year on year, while truck-container volume jumped 15 per cent.



In the first nine months of the year, total container throughput grew 7.5 per cent over the same period last year.
