First half volume at Mumbai's JNPT rises 6.3pc to 2.4 million TEU

CONTAINER throughput at India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) rose 6.3 per cent in the first half of the fiscal year to 2.4 million TEU, up from 2.26 million TEU in the April-to-September period of 2016.

Provisional port statistics show that out of JNPT's four terminals the growth was led by Gateway Terminals India that is operated by APM Terminals (APMT) and DP World's new facility, Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT).

APMT Mumbai's first half volume rose 11.6 per cent year on year to reach 990,463 TEU, while NSIGT handled 296,767 TEU, with volume soaring 43.5 per cent.

Port-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal's growth was flat with throughput at 787,695 TEU, whereas throughput at DP World's flagship Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal declined 15.2 per cent year on year to 328,294 TEU.

The impact of harsh weather that led to vessel backups and intermittent crane stoppages is reflected in JNPT's volume in September, which fell 6.5 per cent to 382,868 TEU from 409,404 TEU in August, reported IHS.
