DP World's fledgling box terminal at India's JNPT bags another MSC service

DP World operated-Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) atJawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has started receiving a weekly call operated by MSC as part of the carrier's new service that connects Asia to the Middle East and Africa.

The independent service, named India-Gulf-West-Africa (INGWE), has the following port rotation: Ningbo, Shanghai, Shekou, Singapore, Colombo, Port Louis (Mauritius), Durban, Coega (South Africa), Salalah, Jebel Ali, Karachi, Mundra, Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Hazira (India), Colombo, and back to Ningbo.

The 9,000-TEU MSC Albany, one of 10 vessels of similar capacities deployed in the INGWE, made the maiden call at NSIGT on September 18, DP World Nhava Sheva officials told IHS Media.

The new service joins a string of regular, weekly calls MSC has at NSIGT, including those from its Himalaya Express (HEX) service between India and Europe, and the IMED service between India and the Mediterranean.

Located next to DP World's flagship Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal, NSIGT began full-fledged operations in February last year. The new terminal includes a berth length of 1,083 feet, a draft of 44 feet, a 68-acre storage yard, four rail-mounted quay cranes, and 12 rubber-tired gantry cranes, with a capacity of one million TEU annually.

Statistics compiled by JOC.com show NSIGT's April-to-August volume increased to 243,242 TEU from 174,410 TEU in the same period last year, and the new MSC call is expected to push that growth trend further in the coming months.
