Mumbai Airport to have half a million-tonne capacity pharma terminal

THE senior vice president & head of Cargo at Mumbai International Airport Limited GVK (GVK MIAL), Manoj Singh, has revealed that the airport is developing a dedicated pharmaceutical facility by converting the existing export perishable terminal to exclusive pharmaceutical terminal.

In an interview with The STAT Trade Times of Navi Mumbai, he said the new terminal will accommodate more pharmaceutical loose cargo and additional 100 built ULDs, taking the overall pharmaceutical handling capacity to 450,000 tonnes.

The Indian pharma industry is the third largest pharmaceuticals market in the world in terms of value and eleventh largest in terms of volume.

In its endeavour to set a benchmark in India for pharma handling, GVK MIAL has commissioned a state-of-the-art facility at MIAL, where only refrigerated trucks are allowed to dock, provides seamless temperature controlled handling to pharmaceuticals at the desired temperature ranges including +15 to +25, +2 to +8 and freezer.

"The flawless coordination between the airlines and shipper/agent while dispatching the pharmaceuticals from shipper factory till the time it reaches the aircraft, guarantees minimum exposure to the pharmaceuticals. We also offer services like wrapping the pharmaceutical built ULDs with the thermal blankets provided by shipper/agent/airlines and handling of active refrigerated containers," Mr Singh said.

Staff will also be trained regularly to keep abreast with the latest technologies and means of functioning.

Mr Singh pointed out that GVK MIAL is in the process of obtaining IATA CEIV certification in collaboration with its stakeholders and service providers. "Also, we are a strategic member of Pharma.Aero, working closely with global airports, freight forwarders and pharma manufacturers," he added.
