Airfreight market in July sees strong growth
AIRPORTS Council International (ACI) says freight volumes continued to increase in July with traffic up by 8.4 per cent with strengthening global trade and industrial production.
Year-to-date global volume growth reached 8.4 per cent, "a particularly stark contrast with July 2016, where this number stood at 0.9 per cent," commented ACI.
Most regions posted strong freight growth in July, with Africa leading at 18.1 per cent, followed by Europe (11.2 per cent), the Middle East (10.6 per cent) and Asia-Pacific (9.3 per cent). North America and Latin-America and Caribbean were more muted, increasing 6.5 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively, in line with their year to date numbers.
South Africa and Kenya both posted growth rates of more than 20 per cent. Most countries in Europe grew in July, with the two largest freight markets in the region, Germany and the UK, making a significant contribution, at 9.3 per cent and 12.5 per cent respectively.
Istanbul Ataturk Airport freight volume rose 32.2 per cent year on year and, continuing a trend started in March, London Heathrow also made a significant contribution, growing 15.1 per cent in July. Despite a decrease in passenger traffic at Doha International Airport due to the ongoing diplomatic row with neighbouring countries, freight continued its sustained growth, reaching 14.5 per cent year on year, London's Air Cargo News reported.
