Virginia to Pennsylvania/Ohio rail service starts from new CSX rail terminal
THE opening of the new CSX rail terminal in Pittsburgh has enabled the port of Virginia to start offering rail service to western Pennsylvania and northwest Ohio.
According to a statement from the Virginia Port Authority, CSX's National Gateway route between Norfolk and Pittsburgh will be operated by double-stack trains and open access to containers at the 70-acre intermodal terminal in Pittsburgh, reported American Shipper.
"This will help to expand an important and growing market for the port of Virginia," CEO of the Virginia Port Authority, John Reinhart, was quoted as saying. "We're moving 36 per cent of our volume by rail and continuing to reduce our dwell times for rail containers. The goal is to continue growing our rail capabilities and offerings and expanding service in that region is critical to the effort."
Port authorities said that between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, 569,000 containers were transported by rail, representing an 11 per cent increase in volume compared to the same period the year prior.
The port of Virginia commenced a US$350 million rail terminal expansion project earlier this year at the Virginia International Gateway (VIG) container terminal in Portsmouth, and a second project is in the pipeline for Norfolk International Terminals (NIT).
