Cargo traffic at HKIA soars 10pc to 412,000 tonnes in August
HONG Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded robust growth in air cargo demand in August, handling 412,000 tonnes of airfreight, a 10.1 per cent increase compared to the same month last year.
The main driver behind the strong growth in cargo throughput was exports, which registered a 12 per cent compared to August 2016. Transshipments also rose by 10 per cent during the month. Amongst the key trading regions, Europe and Southeast Asia increased the most significantly, HKIA said in a statement.
In the first eight months of 2017, cargo volume at HKIA registered 11.1 per cent year-on-year growth to 3.15 million tonnes. On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 4.84 million tonnes of cargo, a year-on-year increase of 10.1 per cent.
Passenger volume recorded year-on-year increases of 5.7 per cent to 6.51 million in August, mainly driven by 7 per cent year-on-year growth in transfers/transits, and 6 per cent growth in Hong Kong resident travel. Growth in Japan market continued to be the major contributor during the month, while Europe also recorded significant increases.
Flight movements in August totalled 35,595, an increase of 2.3 per cent compared to the same month in 2016.
