Lufthansa, IAG Cargo, Air France KLM, Finnair enjoyed high August demand
LUFTHANSA's air freight volume rose 9.8 per cent year on year in August to reach 901 million revenue cargo tonne kilometres.
The percentage growth for the month is ahead of the airline's year-to-date average of eight per cent.
In August, Europe's largest cargo carrier's capacity increased by 2.3 per cent, pushing up the group's cargo load factor to 66.4 per cent from 61.9 per cent last year.
IAG Cargo also experienced a good month as it saw cargo demand grow by 7.6 per cent year on year to 470 million cargo tonne kms, on the back of a 6.4 per cent improvement at British Airways, a 10.8 per cent increase atIberia and a 22.2 per cent increase at Aer Lingus, reported London's Air Cargo News.
Over the first eight months of the year, the airline has seen demand improve by 5.4 per cent against the same period in 2016.
Air France KLM also registered an improvement in demand, with traffic up 1.2 per cent year on year in August to 707 million revenue tonne kilometres.
Performance at the airline was impacted by a reduction of the KLM freighter fleet - at the end of June last year, it operated four Boeing 747-400 freighters and two MD-11s. At the end of the first quarter this year, that was reduced to four B747-400Fs.
As a result, the airline group's cargo capacity in August decreased by 1.2 per cent year on year, while its load factor rose to 56 per cent from 54.7 per cent a year earlier.
Finally, Finnair continued its good performance as it achieved a 20.2 per cent increase in demand to 91.4 million revenue tonne kilometres, making August the airline's busiest on record.
It is also ahead of year-to-date-growth of 6.4 per cent after a slow start to the year as pilots were trained on new aircraft for long-haul routes.
"The strong performance of cargo continued in August, driven by the main Chinese destinations, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway and Finland," the airline said.
"Finnair's total cargo capacity also included three weekly freighter flights between Helsinki and Brussels, operated by DHL as well as cargo space rented on Japan Airlines' daily flights between Tokyo and Helsinki."
