Port of Incheon hits 2 million TEU 40 days earlier than in 2016

THE Port of Incheon's total container throughput reached two million TEU on September 2, 40 days before it hit the same volume in 2016, according to data from the Incheon Port Authority (IPA).

IPA said the port of Incheon's container handling volume first reached the two million TEU milestone on December 6, 2013. Since then, the pace of achieving the landmark has accelerated every year.

The IPA said that the port has been able to reach two million TEU earlier every year because of the increase in trade volume with China and Vietnam after the ROK-China FTA and ROK-Vietnam FTA. In addition, new port facilities with cutting-edge unloading systems such as SNCT and HJIT have opened since June 2015, reported St Petersburg PortNews.

With increase in trade volume and new infrastructure, the Incheon has opened new regular container shipping services covering China, Vietnam and Thailand this year. As a result, the trade volume with major countries such as China and Vietnam has dramatically increased from the prior year. Right now, the port serves 49 regular container lines.

Furthermore, the IPA has collaborated with container terminal operators, quarantine and customs clearance authority, and port service businesses to provide better logistics environment and services. Such efforts have brought increases in trade volume.
