Hapag-Lloyd names new 10,000-TEUer at festive Peruvian ceremony
ANOTHER one of the five new Hapag-Lloyd 10,500-TEU vessels was named the Callao Express in a festive ceremony in the Peruvian port of Callao, the company announced.
"I am deeply touched and very excited. It is a great pleasure and honour for me to have been chosen as patron," said Ruth Barron de Gonzalez, wife ofSouthern Copper CEO Oscar Gonzalez Rocha, an important Peruvian customer.
Moments later, she struck a powerful axe blow that cut the rope triggering the swing of the bottle of champagne that burst against the ship's hull.
Greeting Mrs Gonzalez, Hapag-Lloyd COO Anthony Firmin said: "I know you have 18 grandchildren. Today, you will get another one: this one is truly extraordinary because is 333 metres long and 48 metres wide."
Earlier this year, another 10,500-TEU vessel in the series, the Guayaquil Express, was christened in Hamburg.
Said Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen: "This order for five vessels underlines Hapag-Lloyd's leading role in the Latin American trade. Following the successful merger with CSAV, we are one of the market leaders in this attractive trade."
The last ship of the five ships that are part of the Valparaiso Express class, the Santos Express will be named in Santos, Latin America's biggest port that serves Sao Paolo, Brazil on November 21.
