Petersburg Ring Road better serves Bronka and Moscow-bound cargo

NEW lanes on the St Petersburg Ring Road stand to provide an advantage for Bronka port against rival Petersburg - especially for those who want quick delivery.

Bronka's proximity to the ring road means that shippers will not have to rely on rail as much to get cargo to St Petersburg, and truckers can bypass the traffic and congestion that they must normally face as they make their way through downtown to Big Port St Petersburg.

Sixty per cent of container traffic into Big Port moves via rail, which can take 15 to 24 hours to reach Moscow, reports IHS Media.

That figure rises to 25 or 26 hours during the September-to-October peak shipping season. By comparison, moving containers by truck from Bronka to Moscow takes eight to nine hours.

The St Petersburg Ring Road handles 80 per cent of all containers moved by truck, which comes to about two million TEU annually, according to the Federal Road Transport Agency (FRTA), which oversees Russian road transport and infrastructure development.
