This summer we suffer from continuous high temperatures. And the shipping industry also shows "Shipping Hot"!

Overbooked slots, lack of containers, containers dropped and rate hikes crop up again and again. Must your container endure a cycle of torture before it reaches its destination?

Slots are quite intense in the recent market. At Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan ports, carriers say slots are overbooked. Some claim that their boxes have been rolled over for three to six times. They have waited a month just to get aboard ship.

How's your cargo? Many are in tears!

- This is a sad story

Overbooked slots is just the first ordeal. The saddest thing is when your slot is secured but there are no more containers for you!

Affected by the multiple port strikes at overseas terminals, many containers have not been shipped back yet. Ports like Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Nansha and Qingdao report that there is lack of containers. It is not unusual to see container release require almost one week!

- Have your containers been released?

Due to overbooked slots and the lack of containers, many containers are dropped. In light of this, Europe-Med, Americas and Australia-New Zealand trades have announced rates hike.

According to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI), the overall index rises 10.5 per cent to 88.03 points in the week ended July 28. The US west coast, US east coast and Australia-New Zealand trades enjoy the greatest increase, and the US west coast even surges 37 per cent.

Many ships on East China-Middle East trade will be suspended in August, thus rates increase on the Middle East trade lane is expected.

Meanwhile, carriers have announced higher rates for August and September:

Maersk has upped rates from the Far East to the US and Canada US$800/TEU, $1,000/FEU, $1,000/FEU high cube and reefer, and $1,250 more per 45-footer from September 1.

Already CMA CGM has hiked rates of Europe August 1 to US$1,150/TEU and $2,200/FEU;

Ditto MSC which hiked rates of US-Canada August 1 to $800/TEU and $1,000/FEU;

PIL to up rates to Red Sea August 15 to $300/TEU.

Please tell each other about the stiuation. Forwarders must be careful and confirm shipment with carriers earlier to avoid delay!
