Investigating sleep disorders among US truckers stopped by Trump

US President Donald Trump's administration has stopped investigations into truckers' and train drivers' sleep disorders.

Two agencies in the Department of Transportation announced that they will no longer pursue a regulation to combat obstructive sleep apnoea, said to have cause drivers to fall asleep at the wheel.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)had planned to investigate truck drivers and train engineers for the disorder, reported Bloomberg.

"The agencies have determined not to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking at this time and believe that current safety programmes" and other rules "addressing fatigue risk management are the appropriate avenues to address" the issue, the FMCSA and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) said in a statement.

It "has been in the probable cause of 10 highway and rail accidents investigated by the NTSB in the past 17 years and obstructive sleep apnoea is an issue being examined in several, ongoing, NTSB rail and highway investigations," said a spokesman for the board.
