Oakland sees itself as biggest beneficiary of US-China rice deal

THE Port of Oakland, which has posted a 233 per cent increase in agricultural exports in the last five years, expects to be the big winner from new US-China rice trade pact.

Already shipping two-thirds of US containerised rice exports, Oakland is the nearest port to the Sacramento Valley, one of the biggest rice producers in America, said the port authority.

"Given our location and track record with agricultural exports we would hope to play a role in this new trade breakthrough," said Oakland port maritime chief John Driscoll.

Oakland expects to open a 300,000-square foot refrigerated distribution centre next summer for chilled and frozen beef, pork and poultry. That plant will prepare up to 37,000 TEU for export annually.

American rice exports could enter China as soon as 2018 following approval of a trade agreement last month, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
