12 hurt in hazmat spill on 8,212-TEU 'K' Line ship in Long Beach

TWELVE dockers including a fireman, were injured after a flammable liquid leaked from a shipping container aboard "K" Line's 8,212-TEU Harbour Bridge in from Busan at the Port of Long Beach, harbour officials said.

The spill of the unidentified chemical from the 6,000-gallon container was reported shortly before 9:30am, said Long Beach fire officials.

The vessel was deployed on THE Alliance Pacific Southwest Loop 6 (PS6) transpacific service, according BlueWater Reporting.

Twelve longshoremen and a fireman sustained unspecified injuries in the hazardous materials incident. Two, including a fireman, were taken to a hospital, reported ABC News.

Firemen, assisted by lifeguard rescue boats, created a 1,000-foot containment boom perimeter around the Panamanian-flagged ship to protect the environment, officials said.

Kiev's Maritime and Crimean Shipping News reported that the spill was flammable propyl acetate. The leaking container was offloaded.
