US west coast dockers ratify 3-year contract extension with PMA bosses

SIXTY-SEVEN per cent of west coast International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) members voted to ratify a three-year labour contract extension, the union has announced.

Dockers in 29 ports in California, Oregon and Washington have now ratified the contract extension with the Pacific Maritime Associationm (PMA), the employers' bargaining group.

The vote ends the risk of a general strike for five years. The new contract will raise wages, maintain health benefits, and increase pensions for 20,000 union members from 2019-2022, according to the union and employers' group. Per the policy of each side, however, exact figures have not been revealed.
