Slip in schedule reliability of top 18 global carriers

THE top 18 global shipping lines in the second quarter saw global schedule reliability decline 10.4 percentage points from 85 per cent recorded in the corresponding period a year earlier. 

However, second quarter global schedule reliability improved 2.3 percentage points from 72.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2017 to 74.6 per cent. Fifteen of the top 18 carriers achieved a quarter-on-quarter improvement in their reliability scores. 



Only PIL, Yang Ming, and Hamburg Sud saw their scores drop, according toSeaIntel Maritime Analysis.



In the second quarter, Wan Hai was the most reliable carrier with a schedule reliability score of 79.7 per cent, followed by Hamburg Sud with a score of 78.6, MSC with 77.4 per cent reliability, and Evergreen with a score of 77.0 per cent. 



The biggest year-on-year decreases in schedule reliability were recorded by PIL, MOL, and Yang Ming, with drops of 13.8, 13.6, and 12.2 percentage points respectively. On-time performance was based on 38,995 distinct vessels arrivals.



On the Asia-US west coast trade lanes schedule reliability improved significantly by 17.7 percentage points Q/Q, reaching 76.5 per cent in Q2 2017, and declined 7.1 percentage points compared to the 83.6 per cent as seen in Q2 2016. 



On Asia-US east coast routes, on-time performance increased from 57.3 per cent in 1Q 2017 to 72.4 per cent in 2Q 2017, and deteriorated significantly by 11.4 percentage points on a year-on-year level. 



On-time performance in Asia-North Europe improved 11.4 percentage points Q/Q to 75.1 per cent, yet the second quarter result was 6.8 percentage points below the level recorded in the same period last year.



In the second quarter, schedule reliability in Asia-Mediterranean increased to 72.1 per cent, which corresponds to a Q/Q improvement of 11.6 percentage points.
