Port of Barcelona's H1 cargo tonnage rises to 18pc to record 28.6m tonnes
THE Spanish port of Barcelona handled a record 28.6 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of the year, representing year-on-year growth of 18 per cent. The stellar performance was attributed to container volumes rising 27.2 per cent to 1.3 million TEU, liquid bulk (+10.9 per cent) and freight shipped by motorways of the sea (+7.2 per cent).
In the first six months, transshipment containers increase by 101 per cent, while full import and export containers rose 4.5 per cent and 4.7 per cent respectively, compared to the same period in 2016.
It should be noted that for the first time, import containers amounted to 276,529 TEU this half year, surpassing the pre-crisis record of 272,138 TEU achieved in 2007, reported AJOT.
