Pakistan to probe claims airlines hit fruit exporters unfairly

THE Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) is launching an investigation, following complaints by fruit exporters in Pakistan that foreign airlines are charging higher rates for the export of all perishable commodities, especially for mango shipments to European, Middle Eastern and American destinations.

The commission has decided to look into the issue after a meeting in Islamabad between the director general of CCP, Shaista Bano, and members of the Pakistan Fruit & Vegetable Exporters Association (PFVEA) and Air Cargo Agents Association of Pakistan (ACAAP).

The concerns raised by the PFVEA and ACAAP include the indemnity bond being taken from the exporters before the start of mango season. By virtue of this documents, in case of any mishandling, damage or loss of shipment, the exporters cannot submit a claim, reports the Lahore Daily Times.

Although Pakistan's exporters are paying the highest air freight rates among Indian subcontinent mango exporters, their shipments are not given priority, they say.

Even by paying higher air freights, Pakistani exporters are not able to compete in international markets.

Furthermore, due to the negligence and mishandling by airlines the export consignments are being rejected which leads to heavy revenue losses for the exporters.
