Hong Kong airport first half cargo up 11.3pc to 2.3 million tonnes

HONG KONG International Airport's (HKIA) cargo throughput increased 11.3 per cent to 2.3 million tonnes in the first six months of 2017, assisted by a June export surge.

Cargo throughput in June was 410,000 tonnes, representing year-on-year growth of 11.4 per cent at the world's number one air freight hub in 2016.

Passenger throughput was up 1.3 per cent to 35.7 million while flight movements increased 0.9 per cent to 206,560 year on year.

The strong half year cargo result was due largely to higher exports coinciding with an improvement in global trade, said the HKIA.

"A 17 per cent year-on-year increase in June exports led to high growth in cargo tonnage for the month. Transshipments also registered strong 10 per cent growth. Among key trading regions, Europe and North America saw the most significant increases in June," said the airport statement.

On a rolling 12-month basis, cargo throughput increased nine per cent to 4.8 million tonnes year on year.
