Pricing to encourage shippers to use rail at JNPT begins to pay off
INDIA's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust has been making pricing adjustments to encourage more shippers to use rail to ease pressure on roadways in preparation for the expected growth in volumes after a fourth container terminal opens at the end of the year.
For the first time in recent months, JNPT's monthly rail share in June reached 15 per cent, up from 13.8 per cent in the prior month, according to port statistics analysed by JOC.com.
JNPT handled 57,313 TEU in June by intermodal train, out of total throughput of 381,699 TEU, versus 55,732 TEU and 404,357 TEU, respectively, in May. The port's share of truckloads edged down to 83.6 per cent from 85.1 per cent, or 319,161 TEU, compared with 344,057 TEU, statistics show, reported IHS Media.
As part of its efforts to scale up rail volumes, JNPT recently secured approval from the Tariff Authority for Major Ports to equalise train and truck handling charges at all terminals, which now remain at INR844 (US$13) per TEU, a sharp decrease from the previous rail rate of INR1,947 per TEU.
In addition, authorities are working with the Ministry of Railways and intermodal operator Container Corporation of India (Concor) to increase train services and set up a "common rail yard" for all terminals to smooth quayside rail operations.
Port officials expect work on the INR100 million rail terminal to be completed towards the end of next year. The port is also in the process of finalising a contract to deepen its fairway to 15 metres and add more rubber-tire gantry cranes to its own terminal.
Notably, JNPT has made significant gains in berth and port productivity, with fiscal year 2016 to 2017 average pre-berthing times down to 0.8 days from 1.21 days previously; average ship turnaround times down to 2.01 days from 2.44 days; and average gross berth productivity up to 78.58 moves per hour from 69.46 moves per hour.
