UN's IMO has 7-point strategy to kill carbon in world shipping
THE UN's International Maritime Organisation has settled on an interim strategy to decarbonise world shipping, according to a Washington public relations firm Global Strategic Communications Group (GSCG).
"Over 170 countries meeting at the IMO in London settled on a seven-step outline to be developed into an interim plan due in 2018," said the GSCG press release.
"One proposal calling for the shipping sector to adopt climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement and decarbonise by the second half of the century failed to reach a consensus.
"China and India supported low carbon fuels. Countries with long lines of communication - among them Brazil and Chile - voiced fears of negative impacts of carbon reduction.
"The seven-step plan agreed this week will form the basis of the IMO's first substantial attempt to tackle climate change, 20 years after first being requested to do so under the Kyoto Protocol," said the GSCG press release.
