'Direct port delivery' speeds clearance at Jawaharlal Nehru port

USING direct the port delivery (DPD) scheme for imports has eased customs clearance and reduced congestion at Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) port, which is to commission the first phase of the fourth container terminal.

DPD facilitates movement of import cargo as it helps deliver the shipment from the port to the importer's warehouse or factory directly, reported Mumbai's DNA Money.

Many importers have welcomed this game-changing move and some more are looking at re-routing their containers from other nearby ports to JN Port, said DNA. Clearance of containers, which used to take a week, takes up to 48 hours now, it claimed.

Once the first phase of the fourth terminal is commissioned in December, Jawaharlal Nehru Customs House (JNCH) expects more importers to benefit from DPD. The overall share of shipments going through DPD is expected to rise by 10 per cent, thereby bringing half of the imports under the scheme.

"The new terminal, when commissioned, will boost DPD as it will also have on-wheel container inspection facility. This facility will help in faster clearance of cargo," said chief commissioner of customs, (Mumbai Zone-II), JNCH, John Joseph.

At present, authorities have to move the cargo from the terminal to another location or container freight station (CFS) to get shipments cleared by customs.

"As of May-end, 32 per cent of the cargo was getting imported via DPD. By end of June or July, our target is to touch 40 per cent," said deputy commissioner of customs, JNCH, CP Singh. "We are allowing every manufacturer to register with us so that they need not go through CFS," he added.
