Ethiopian air cargo terminal grand opening at June 27 ICAO meet
ETHIOPIAN Airlines will formally open its Cargo Terminal-II on June 27 at the UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) Global Air Cargo Development Forum in Addis Ababa.
The 150,000-square metre terminal includes a dry cargo terminal warehouse, the perishable cool chain storage, and an apron accommodating five big freighters, reports New York's Air Cargo World.
The terminal will have climate chambers for fresh agricultural products, pharmaceuticals and life science products.
Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde GebreMariam said that as part of a US$150 million investment in cargo facilities, combined with old Terminal-I, bring total tonnage capacity to one million tonnes a year, the biggest in Africa.
"Upon completion of the second phase, which adds 600,000 tonnes annual uplift capacity, Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services will have one of the world's largest cargo terminals; a capability equivalent to cargo terminals in Amsterdam Schiphol, Changi or Hong Kong," he said.
This investment and the resulting massive cargo facilities along with the six modern B-777F fleet and two B-757Fs will create adequate air cargo transport capacity for the fast-growing export and import demand, he said.
